Lovely town on the side of the lake with good shops, restaurants and some historical sights. Beware it is very hilly away from lakeside but public transport is very good. In summer Neuchâtel clearly has a North-Italian atmosphere to me, originating from the old town buildings, the vibes in the harbour and even home-made icecream everywhere! The waterfront was lovely as were the flowers and garden areas. A wonderful restaurant on the water was our best meal. The market on the weekend was the most civilized, organized and pleasant of any other European market. The produce was amazing. When we stayed (Jan 2025) we received the Neuchâtel Tourist Card from our accommodation which gave free access to museums and public transport. A great positive surprise. We realised there is so much to see and visit in and around Neuchâtel. Will definitely have to come back. It is not touched by mass tourism, not yet. It was an Amarcord thing for me, to re-visit the place where I used to live as a student in my twenties. Lots of changes, I liked the old Swiss style.
