Somewhere to Love
Surrounded by Lake Geneva and glorious Alpine peaks, tranquil Montreux has enchanted artistes through the ages. Lord Byron was so inspired by the style and setting of waterfront Château de Chillon that he wrote a poem about it. Nowadays it is one of Switzerland’s most popular attractions.
Freddie Mercury also fell in love with Montreux and a lakefront statue in Place du Marché commemorates this former resident in typical pose, with one arm raised to the heavens. Queen fans flock here for the annual Memorial Day, just one musical festival hosted by this town. The most famous is the 2-week Montreux Jazz Festival, held in the Music & Convention Centre.
On the opposite side of town is Audiorama (the Swiss National Audiovisual Museum), near a funicular railway which climbs the hill. Further up the slopes is the family-friendly Rochers-de-Naye ski area, while the Les Pléiades pistes overlook neighbouring Vevey. Down at the quayside wooden chalets house stalls of the annual Christmas market.
Summer activities include boat trips, hiking and the Montreux-Oberland-Bernois narrow gauge railway whose trains allow you to really savour the views…and a nice cup of coffee.
The train station also connects to Geneva, site of the nearest airport, and Booking.com offers luxury hotels, apartments with views and cheap B&Bs nearby.

Montreux was a nice location to go to Rocher de Naye. There were some great walks in the neighbourhood like 'Gorges de Chauderons'. There are plenty of bars and restaurants. We were there for the Montreux Jazz Festival and also did Roche the Naze, Mont Pelerrin, castle Chillon and the old Town which was really spectacular. The festival is a must do and hopefully we can return. We dined at Safran in the Mona Hotel excellent. The Fouquet at the casino- could do better, and also Montreux Jazz Cafe. We were there for the Jazz festival; a wonderful eclectic selection of bands and artists in a beautiful location along the Montreux shoreline. But it would have been almost as good, at any other time. The lakeside location with its embankement/shoreline path, running for miles to east and west simply invites endless ambling. Swimming from the rocks is lovely, as is stopping at the various bars and cafe's that puntuate the shoreline. Montreux is a very convenient base for travel in Western Switzerland. If traveling by rail, Montreux station is a terminus for the Chocolate Train, the Golden Pass Express, and rapid express trains to Geneva and Lausanne. The Lake Geneva ferry piers are also just a short walk from the train station, as is the bus to Chillon Castle. However, you do have to watch out for pick pocket schemes. We saw young adult pickpockets working individual tourists near Chillon Castle and near the ferry piers - and they weren't particularly hard to detect.Guest review byScottUnited States - 10.0

We were there at the beginning of the season. It was already quite crowded and they were setting up everything for the Montreux Jazz Festival. Montreux is a traditional seaside tourist town. You can easily slow down, stroll along the lake, sit in cute cafés and bars or in the park and enjoy the international and diverse crowd passing by. There are easy short trips to the marvelous Chillon castle (by boat or bus), to some nearby mountaintops or neighboring towns. People swim in the lake. A very nice place was the café "Les Voiles". It is easy to get around on foot and there are also bus, train, boat options. I recommend staying 2-3 nights to really get into the vibe.Guest review byAstradirSwitzerland
