Mechelen is a visually appealing small city with a fascinating history. I have visited two times previously and as it is within an easy train trip of the Brussels airport it is my preferred place to stay before taking a flight from Belgium. It has lots of attractions (climbing the tower in the cathedral is taxing), is easy to walk around and has lots of restaurants. On each of my visits I seem to have been fortunate to coincide with a musical event -perhaps they have a lot or maybe I was just lucky. Beautiful city. Lots to see. Right between Antwerp and Brussels. Could easily use this as a home base for a week or more of exploring. Tons of places to eat and shop. Safe. Mechelen proved to be a very attractive place, its lovely centre containing many beautiful old buildings. The cathedral is spectacular. There is a good choice of places to eat and drink, at reasonable prices. It's very quiet - almost eerily so in the daytime - and so a very relaxing place to wander around. The room was big enough, with a big bed and a small desk, which was useful for working and having tea. There was everything I needed. The location worked fine for me. It's quiet in the neighborhood.
